University of Mississippi Medical Center MS-Biomedical Sciences program

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is currently accepting applications for August 2017 entry into the MS-Biomedical Sciences (MS-BioMedSci) program. The MS-BioMedSci program is a one year, 30 credit hour, non-thesis Master's program designed to enhance the academic credentials of students seeking admission to professional or graduate school.

The MS-Biomedical Sciences program prepares students for medical and dental school. The curriculum includes courses in biochemistry, physiology, and microbiology taught to both dental and graduate students, as well as graduate school courses in histology, human anatomy and biostatistics, and a seminar course focused on translational research. An optional MCAT preparation class is also available.

Nationally recognized faculty. UMMC faculty are not only excellent educators, but are also engaged in groundbreaking research in basic and clinical sciences, population health, and human diseases. Our courses are taught by medical school faculty and provide excellent preparation for the academic sections of the MCAT and DAT examinations and for the challenges of professional school.

Performance in this program is an indicator of success in medical and dental school. Although good academic performance by itself does not guarantee admission, students who earn competitive grades in the MS program gain entry into professional school, and once admitted, perform well.

Low cost tuition and one year program. Tuition costs are only ~ $8000 for in-state students and ~ $22,000 for out-of-state students. Financial aid is available for full time students in good academic standing.

Vibrant living environment near campus. UMMC is nestled in the trendy Fondren neighborhood which serves as the artistic center for the Jackson metro area. The people are friendly, diverse, and social. The environment is family oriented and there's always something to do in Fondren. The Meridian, Fondren's newest and finest apartment living, is located across the street from UMMC. Restaurants, shopping, entertainment and more are all within walking distance. It's a great place to live and learn.

Applications for the 2017-2018 academic year are reviewed beginning April 1. Classes begin early in August and continue through mid-May. Because of their linkage with dental school courses, classes are only taught during the day.

Admission requirements and application process. Admission is competitive and based on letters of support, your personal statement, academic record (GPA), and performance on the GRE, MCAT or DAT. Preference is given to students with an overall GPA ≥ 3.0 on a 4 point scale and to those with scores of:

≥ 295 on the combined verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or

≥ 492 on the MCAT, or

≥ 15 on the DAT.
