CERT at VCU - Post bac

The CERT Program at VCU is a two-semester graduate-level training program designed for individuals seeking to enhance their credentials for admission into medical, dental or graduate schools. Students enrolled in our program normally have a solid undergraduate GPA (+3.2) and have received a 502 MCAT score or a 152 GRE score.  As you know, these are solid scores but are often not competitive enough to secure a spot in medical or dental schools within the U.S.  More often than not, Admissions Committees are concerned that a student with these academic credentials may be overwhelmed by the workload and rigors of medical school.  Consequently, many students are not given the opportunity to prove themselves and end up foregoing their aspirations of a medical career.  This is the academic niche our program thrives in.  Our 27 credit hour program provides students with coursework that reflects much of what is taught in the first year at medical school, i.e. Physiology, Biochemistry, Human Embryology, Gross Anatomy with Dissection, Histology, Neuroanatomy and Cardiology.  Moreover, these courses are taught by many of the same Professors that teach in our medical program.  Additionally, as our CERT Program is part of VCU’s School of Medicine, which is affiliated with one of the top teaching hospitals in the nation, students in our program are provided with invaluable Shadowing and Research opportunities to enhance their application.  Also, CERT students are provided with the MCAT/DAT Preparatory course.  Most importantly, upon completion of the CERT Program, students obtaining a CERT GPA of 3.5+ and an MCAT of 505+ will receive a guaranteed interview with the VCU School of Medicine. Similarly, students obtaining a CERT GPA of 3.5+ and a DAT of 20+ will receive a guaranteed early file review with the VCU School of Dentistry.
Here are some statistics that speak to the success of this program:
1.)    Upon completing the CERT program our students, on average, improve their MCAT score by 7pts and improve their DAT score by 2pts.
2.)    Over 80% of students that successfully complete the CERT Program are accepted into medical or dental school…if other health care professions are included it is 95%.
3.)    Over 85% of students that receive a 4.0 GPA in our Program are accepted at VCU’s School of Medicine.
4.)    The average Step 1 score for a CERT graduate that received a 4.0 GPA in the program is 245, which is 15 points above the National average step 1 board score of 230.
New to the 2019-2020 application cycle, we are offering both Fall and Spring matriculation dates.
