Clinical Exposure
Learn through hands-on exposure about the local healthcare system during SIHF! Fellows can experience different settings through FIMRC clinics, health posts, and/or partner medical facilities. Each site contains different clinical opportunities such as hospital rotations, maternity wards, and primary care services. No matter the community, all Fellows will be given the opportunity to expand and develop their clinical skills. Examples include vitals, blood glucose testing, and developmental assessments. In 2018, Fellows from Project Bududa were able to observe live births within the maternity ward and follow up with mothers and children through post-natal visits!

Community Outreach
Community outreach is an essential piece to understanding development, and Fellows get to participate fully! Each outreach and education initiative, whether a home health visit, data collection, or health education session, allows Fellows to better understand the community and develop close relationships with its members. FIMRC staff work with Fellows to plan and implement sustainable solutions that will be continued after July. Last year, Fellows from Project La Merced helped train community youth on first aid response. Long after they had left the site, one student was able to provide support immediately after an accident!

SIHF Project
SIHF Fellows work in small groups within the cohort to implement a project that addresses a community need. Field staff assign projects based on educational background, interests, and skills. Projects can include topics such as program monitoring and evaluation, new program creation, and researching best practices for community health. In 2018, Fellows at Project Restauración reworked the Prenatal and Breastfeeding Program to enhance its reach while using data collected in SIHF 2017!
