Applying Global Health Concepts Locally

The world is more interconnected than ever before and with that, the health of people everywhere is of growing concern to us all.  Diseases do not respect boundaries and countries throughout the world are more diverse than they were even a decade ago. Global health is about improving healthcare worldwide, reducing healthcare disparities and applying global health strategies to underserved populations locally. Students who study global health become more attuned to social justice issues, they gain experience working with diverse communities, and they learn to work effectively with underserved populations. Students learn about community-led programs that can uncover boundless potential for health equity in local communities. The remarkable lessons of global health that they learn can be applied in Malawi, Israel, the U.S., Canada or anywhere worldwide.

The unique curriculum at the Medical School for International Health (MSIH) prepares physicians to work with diverse populations locally and globally. Israel's diverse population introduces a mixture of ethnicities and national origins rendering it a microcosm of a globalized society.  The curriculum includes:
  • A year-long course that provides historic background, critical concepts and practices and emerging issues in the field of global health.
  • Our innovative course, Being a Doctor, revolves around three axes: the patient and doctor, the doctor and society, and the doctor and him or her self.
  • Global Health modules in years I and II, including Migration & Health, Women's Health, Human Nutrition, HIV/AIDS, Birth as a Human Right, etc.
  • Cross Cultural Communication Workshops in the third year.
  • Clinical clerkships at Soroka Medical Center with exposure to diverse patients from southern Israel's Bedouin and Ethiopian communities, as well as other immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East.
  • A Global Health Day at the conclusion of each clerkship.
  • Clinical electives throughout North America, including through our affiliates, Columbia University Medical Center, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.
  • The culminating experience is the global health clerkship, in which students put their years of medical studies to use in resource-scarce, real-world settings. They are immersed in a
  • challenging clinical setting dealing with diseases, illnesses, pathologies and conditions most of them have never experienced before. The students are learning how physicians and medical practitioners in different cultures promote health and quality care despite limited resources. Our Global Health sites are located in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Canada, Peru, Mexico and Ghana.
Through this coursework and clinical work, students learn to understand the global burden of disease and to work in resource poor settings with vulnerable populations.  They learn to work within the complexities of cross-cultural medicine, including working with international organizations, and they gain experience working with diverse communities locally and throughout the world.
