MCIBS:
  • is highly interdisciplinary
  • crosses departmental and college boundaries
  • has over 100 outstanding research faculty as members
  • has a flexible structure so you can pursue projects without traditional program boundaries
  • has six emphasis areas that serve only to shape curriculum, not research, leading to superior collaborative opportunities:

MCIBS was created to revolutionize our graduate education and to produce critical, forward-thinking scientists who are familiar not only with the scientific process, but also with cutting-edge methodologies and equipment. This includes building collaborative teams across disciplines to address important scientific questions, and interfacing with industry and the public, as well as providing an awareness of the wide variety of career options open to life science Ph.D. graduates. We tripled in size between years one and two, and are now recruiting our third class, with room for further expansion.
MCIBS faculty are located on the main Penn State campus at University Park, nestled in the beautiful hills of central Pennsylvania in the town of State College. Founded in 1855, not only do we offer a stellar scientific environment, but also a wonderful place to live. In fact, our region is nicknamed ‘Happy Valley’. There is access to many outdoor pursuits, from hiking and biking to fishing, water-sports and even a local ski slope. Amish culture is seen in local communities and in our weekly farmers markets, which provide the best in local produce. State College is very affordable, to the point that some Ph.D. students choose to purchase houses in the area.

State College (recently ranked best town in Pennsylvania and 14th in the nation by Niche, as well as the nation’s #2 college town by forbes.com) is a safe, vibrant college town with a variety of living, eating, and entertainment options. Town and gown together offer an active arts scene, with several theater and concert venues that host local, national, and international performing groups of all kinds. Our central location also offers ready access to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington D.C. by car and bus, while the local airport connects us to additional major cities, such as Detroit and Chicago.
