Medical School for International Health Celebrates Near Perfect Match

Last month, the fourth-year students at the Medical School for International Health celebrated their residency matches.  95% of MSIH students matched into residency programs, with a large number of them matching in Primary Care Fields.  For 2016, 26% of placements were in Family Medicine, 23% in Internal Medicine and another 16% in Pediatrics (see graph).  Other students matched in Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, General Surgery and Neurosurgery.  Many of the students matched at their first or second choice for residency.

Highlights of the match include Hayley Amuyal, a graduate of Lehigh University, who will be doing her residency in Pediatrics at Georgetown University Hospital. Tiffany Chow, a UCLA graduate, will be returning to California to do her residency in Pediatrics at UCLA Medical Center, while Jonathan Ditty, a fellow UCLA graduate will be doing his residency in Family Medicine at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana.  In addition, Kathleen Biblowitz, an Amherst College and Columbia University Postbacc graduate, will be doing her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Alumni Spotlight:
Dr. Benjamin Courchia, a native of France, graduate of Yeshiva University and member of the MSIH class of 2013, is currently in his last year of his Pediatrics residency at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, New York.  He recently matched into a Neonatal ICU fellowship program at the University of Miami.  Dr. Courchia is eager to begin his fellowship, which as he states, "has a strong dedication to global health with opportunities to practice abroad."  In reflecting on his time at the MSIH, Dr. Courchia comments about his clinical rotations, stating "My help was always welcomed no matter the time or the department. This time spent in Soroka is what allows me today to be the kind of resident I am today."

The Medical School for International Health (MSIH) is the only four-year North American-style medical school that incorporates global health coursework into all four years of the medical school curriculum.  The MSIH is an English-language track at Ben-Gurion University and has been affiliated with Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons since inception.  MSIH students spend three years in Beer-Sheva, Israel, then go on to conduct fourth-year clinical electives at Columbia University Medical Center, and at other institutions in the United States and Canada.
