Ecela Spanish & Medicine summer program

Did you know...

The USA has more Spanish speakers than Spain?

It's true.

And by 2050 it will pass Mexico.

That's right...the next generation of doctors will be serving the world's largest Spanish-speaking population.

What does that mean for tomorrow's health care professionals?

What does that mean for today's pre-health student?

What are job prospects for someone highly educated in medicine, yet with substandard Spanish skills?

The Ecela Spanish & Medicine summer program in ViƱa del Mar, Chile is carefully designed to help today's pre-health student face demographic realities.

During six weeks (summer 2016) students:
  1. Learn more than two semesters worth of college Spanish, receiving 6 credits in most cases
  2. Gain medical shadowing experience in Chilean public health clinics
  3. Receive additional Spanish lessons specific to health care situations
  4. Acquire empathy for Latino cultures by living with a local host family
While the program will help participants stand apart from their peers on future graduate school and job applications, that should be a side-benefit, not a reason, for participating.

During the application process (more info here) we look for students that:
  • clearly intend to help the Spanish-speaking population of the USA
  • can handle being in a foreign country for six weeks
  • can live in conditions sometimes uncomfortable
  • can get along with people of a different background and culture
Spending the summer in Chile is definitely not for everyone.

But students willing to sacrifice some comforts, and to forego the typical lazy days of summer, will be rewarded through helping others.

By being able to better serve an often marginalized section of America.
